Comparison of chelates for enhancing Ricinus communis L. phytoremediation of Cd and Pb contaminated soil

Abstract: a b s t r a c tWe studied chelate effects on castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) growth. These effects included Cd and Pb accumulation in plant tissues and the chemical behavior of Cd and Pb in the plant rhizosphere and nonrhizosphere. Tests were conducted in a glasshouse using the rhizobag method. Two castor bean cultivars (Zibo-3 and Zibo-9) were grown in soil contaminated with 3.53 mg/kg Cd and 274 mg/kg Pb. The soil was treated with citric acid (CA), ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS) or ethylenediamine … Show more

“…Synthetic chelates, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS), can increase the plant's ability to uptake cadmium [181]. EDDS was shown to be the most suitable chelate for phytoremediation of Cd in soil [182]. In addition to chelates, the application of water-soluble chitosan also enhances Cd uptake [36].…”

“…Chelator is one type of bonding ion, which involves in the formation of two or more separate coordinate bonds. Citric acid (CA), ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS) chelates effect the growth, heavy metal accumulation, metal bioavailability in the rhizhosphere and the non-rhizosphere on metal accumulation and enhance the phytoremediation efficacy in castor bean of Cd and Pb contaminated soils (54). Ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA), nitriloacetic acid (NTA), ammonium citrate have accelerated Cd uptake in R. communis in Cd contaminated soils (55).…”

“…Jatropha curcas (jatropha), for example, is a potential plant for phytoremediation of land or soil polluted with various heavy metals (Edao 2017). Ricinus communis (castor bean) has also been known to have the ability to stabilize residues and lower metal levels (Olivares et al 2013), as well as to grow well in the presence of lead (Zhang et al 2015). Reutealis trisperma (candlenut), a tree species, has good adaptability to grow in marginal lands such as posttin mining soil, very dry land, and acidic soils (Pranowo et al 2015), and was able to adapt to the gold mine's liquid waste (Hamim et al 2017).…”
