Comparison of Chlorophyll Fluorescence Parameters of Cucumis Sativus and Mentha Piperita Leaves Exposed to Short-Term UV-B Irradiation

Abstract: Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Dar) leaves exposed to UV-B irradiation at a biologically effective dose of 9.5 kJ m -2 d -1 showed decreased chlorophyll fluorescence parameter values versus the control; in peppermint (Mentha piperita L. cv. Asia) leaves those values were almost unchanged after treatment. F v /F o and Rfd were reduced more than other values, indicating inhibition of the oxygen-evolving complex and cooperation between the light and dark photosynthesis reactions as the primary targets of UV-B. … Show more

“…The deleterious effects of UV radiation on growth, productivity and photosynthesis in higher plants have been studied extensively (Rybus-Zając and Kubiś, 2010;Skórska, 2011). UVB radiation impairs all major processes of photosynthesis, including photochemical reactions in thylakoid membranes (Skórska 2011), and causes oxidative damage and growth inhibition in higher plants (Rybus-Zając and Kubiś, 2010).…”

“…The cause of the reduction might be associated with enhancement of excitation energy quenching in PSII antennae. The decline in Y is generally considered to indicate physiological regulation of electron transport (Skórska 2011). Day and Vogelmann (1995) also suggested the Y is lower in UV-B Table 2.…”

“…The net photosynthesis intensity (p N , μmol CO 2 m -2 s -1 ) and transpiration rate (E, mmol H 2 O m -2 s -1 ) were measured using an open circuit portable TPS-2 gas-exchange system with a portable PLC camera (PP Systems, UK). Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (F v /F o , ETR, Rfd) of maize leaves were measured with a PAM 210 fluorometer (Walz, Effeltrich, Germany), as described earlier (Skórska and Murkowski, 2018). To determine UV-absorbing compounds (mainly flavonoids) the ethanol extract from leaves was prepared according to Caldwell et al (1994).…”
