Comparison of clinical and biometric characteristics between nanophthalmic children and age-matched controls

Abstract: Purpose: To compare the clinical and biometric characteristics of children presenting with nanophthalmos (NO group) with that of age-matched controls (CO group). Methods: Electronic medical records of 40 children (<18 years of age) with diagnosis of nanophthalmos (NO), presented to a tertiary center in Tamil Nadu between January 2010 and December 2019, were reviewed and compared with 30 age-matched controls (CO) presenting for routine eye examination between October 201… Show more

“…[ 2 ] We followed the same diagnostic criteria for our study cohorts also. [ 3 ] We do agree with the authors that there are no clear diagnostic criteria for pediatric nanophthalmos and there may be an overlap of diagnosis with relative anterior microphthalmos (RAM), high hyperopia, and posterior microphthalmos if only axial length is taken as the diagnostic criterion. [ 4 ]…”

“…The article in the present issue of the journal details the characteristics of 40 patients with nanophthalmos, comparing them with the normal population. [ 4 ] It is crucial to understand that definition of nanophthalmos cannot be simplified to <20.5 mm, as used in the present article, for all age groups. Similarly, a blanket value of less than <16 years with no age range and an axial length cutoff value of 17 mm doesn’t provide useful clinical information.…”

“…The current study[ 8 ] compares the long-term clinical and biometric characteristics between the nanophthalmic children and age-matched controls, and the authors must be congratulated for this excellent comparative analysis. The major reasons for visual impairment were ametropic amblyopia, strabismus, angle-closure, and pigmentary retinopathy, which is in accordance with the previously available literature.…”
