Comparison of conventional and integrated programs for control of Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae)

Abstract: The twospotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch, is one of the main pests on strawberry crops in Brazil. TSSM can be difficult to control due to acaricide resistance. The objective of this work was to compare the effect of conventional and integrated strawberry production (ISP) systems on mite abundance and acaricide resistance. The control of TSSM in ISP was based on the release of Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) or application of a selective acaricide (propargite), when TSSM monitoring indicat… Show more

“…Among these, two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) is one of the main pests of strawberry crop in Brazil (Moraes & Flechtmann, 2008;Iwassaki et al, 2015), causing mesophilic cell damage and stomata closure, reduction of photosynthetic rate of the plant and reduction in final crop production. Synthetic acaricides are the most used substances to control this pest (López et al, 2014;Bernardi et al, 2015).…”

“…The main form of control of this pest is through the use of synthetic acaricides; the continual use of these products in irrigated and protected farming activities in the region has led to populations of T. urticae resistant to one of the most widely used acaricides: Ortus ® (a.i. fenpyroximate) (Iwassaki et al, 2015).…”

“…An alternative method is the biological control with the use of predatory mites of the family Phytoseiidae, which are considered the most important agents for the biological control of phytophagous mites in agricultural systems FLECHTMANN, 2008). In Brazil, several studies on the use of phytoseiid mites for the control of T. urticae were carried out in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, with emphasis on strawberries and ornamental plants (FERLA et al 2007;SATO et al, 2007;BERNARDI et al, 2010;IWASSAKI et al, 2015); however, studies on predaceous mites in vineyards cultivated in the Northeast region of the country are still scarce (DOMINGOS et al, 2014).…”
