Comparison of Diagnostic Ability of Storage Phosphor Plate in Detecting Proximal Caries with Direct Measurement by Stereomicroscope: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Radiography plays an important role in detection of interproximal caries. The aim of study is to compare diagnostic ability of photo stimulable phosphor (PSP) with direct measurement using stereomicroscope in detecting proximal caries. Hundred proximal surfaces of 50 extracted human posterior teeth were radiographed with dental X-ray unit. The image receptors used was storage phosphor plate Vista scan (size 2), (time of exposure 0.4 s). Radiographs were interpreted and caries lesions were classified on a 4-poi… Show more

“…The use of the stereomicroscope to analyze dental tissues and assess the extent of their lesions (caries, wear, leakage of restorations…) is described in the literature [ 31 , 32 , 33 ], so we used this method to check the sample was entirely of enamel or dentin, before grinding it. There are studies in the literature in which this procedure is also performed to compare the behavior of a certain product on each structure [ 16 , 28 ].…”

“…75 Approximal caries lesion depth was accurate, when estimated in images from a PSP system (Vista Scan) compared with stereomicroscopy of the tooth sections. 76 A CCDbased system (Dixi) and a PSP system (Digora) were more accurate than other CCD-(Sidexis) and PSP-(DenOptix) systems for measurement of caries lesion depth. 77 With the aim to detect cavitated lesions in primary molars, there was no significant difference between the accuracy of E-speed film and the Digora PSP system.…”
