Comparison of Different Methods of Measuring Pavement Conditions : Technical Paper

Abstract: SUMMARYThis report presents the results of a field study of the precision of various roughometers and profilometers for predicting serviceability.Forty-five pavement sections of three types (flexible, rigid and overlay) were rated by a lay panel, the AASHO Road Test panel and the HighwayResearch Board Committee on Pavement Condition Evaluation. These same pavements were evaluated using the roughness and profilometer equipment.Statistical relationships, following techniques adopted at the ASSHO Road Test, were … Show more

“…One of the components required for calculation of PSI is the slope variance of the road profile. Slope variance (SV) is a statistical term that indicates the variation of slope of a pavement from the mean slope value (11). It is computed from the longitudinal profile by use of the following equation:…”

“…PSI was developed at the AASHO road test as a way of characterizing the riding quality of the road (11). At the road test, a panel of 15 engineers drove over selected pavements and rated the pavements using a scale of 0 to 5.…”

“…The scale has been divided into five major divisions, and each division has been assigned a qualitative description as follows: 0.0 to 1.0 -"Very Poor"; 1.0 to 2.0 -"Poor"; 2.0 to 3.0 -"Fair"; 3.0 to 4.0 -"Good"; and 4.0 to 5.0 -"Very Good". (7,15,19) In determining the present serviceability only the condition of the pavement was considered in these three studies.…”
