Comparison of Directly and Inductively Coupled Pulsed Electromagnetic Thrusters

Abstract: Pulsed electromagnetic plasma accelerators and, more specifically, those that are inductively coupled potentially have high thrust density, high specific impulse, and long thruster lifetime since there is limited contact between the plasma and coil(s). One-dimensional electromechanical models of these thrusters, which are important for identifying important relationships among circuit parameters, coil geometry, and plasma, usually make the same underlying assumption about the mutual inductance between the prim… Show more

“…A gas-fed PPT could in principle deliver I sp above 10000 s. An ablative PPT can be operated in Z-pinch configuration for increasing the thrust-to-power ratio and the propellant utilization [51]. Inductively coupled pulsed thrusters have been investigated as a possibility to limit the interaction between the electrodes and the plasma, hence mitigating the lifetime issue [52,53]. Another possibility to improve PPT efficiency is to use metals as a propellant.…”

“…Given the coil radii, lengths, cone angle, and plasmoid geometry, the mutual inductance profiles M op (z) and M ip (z) and L o , L i , L p can be calculated using analytical equations, experimental methods, or electromagnetic field solvers. As multiple authors have discovered [58], [2], [60], the M(z) profile satisfies an exponential distribution, similar to:…”
