Comparison of Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) and Economic Burden on People With Drug-Susceptible Tuberculosis and Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis in Korea

Abstract: In the future, tuberculosis (TB) will place a heavy burden on the aging population in Korea. To prepare for this crisis, it is important to analyze the disease burden trend of drug-susceptible tuberculosis (DS-TB) and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Measuring disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and economic burden on MDR-TB patients can help reduce the incidence of TB. Accordingly, in this study, we measured the DALYs and economic burden on DS-TB and MDR-TB patients in 2014–2017 using a combinati… Show more

“…Adverse treatment outcomes not only impose significant mental and economic burdens on patients and their families but also contribute to the emergence of drug-resistant strains [11][12][13][14]. Treating drug-resistant PTB typically spans two years with a cure rate of only about 63% [15][16][17][18], and the associated treatment costs are more than 100 times higher than those for ordinary PTB [19,20].Therefore, understanding the factors influencing the successful treatment of PTB patients holds significant importance.…”

“…However, the public health crisis extends beyond conventional PTB, as the emergence of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-PTB) exacerbates the situation, stemming from natural genetic variations or inappropriate drug utilization [6,7].The management of DR-PTB presents formidable challenges, with treatment durations extending up to two years [8,9], a modest cure rate of approximately 63% [10,11], and treatment costs exceeding those of standard PTB by over 100-fold [12,13]. Among DR-PTB cases, multi-drug resistance/Rifampicin-resistant PTB (MDR/RR-PTB) constitutes the most prevalent subtype, with an estimated 410,000 individuals worldwide a icted with MDR/RR-PTB in 2022.…”

“…Despite a continuous decline in the incidence rate, South Korea still had the highest TB incidence rate and the third highest TB mortality rate among the 38 member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 2020. With new TB cases reaching 19,933 in 2020, the situation still presents a significant challenge [1][2][3][4][5].…”
