Comparison of dynamic visuals to other presentation formats when learning social science topics in an online setting

Abstract: Despite the widespread use of whiteboard animations in both academic and informal settings, little evidence exists about their efficacy and impact on learner experiences, especially in non-STEM fields such as the social sciences. This study examined the effects of whiteboard animations against three other instructional formats on comprehension, measured by multiple choice questions and an open-ended summary question, and subjective experiences measured by Likert scale items. “…Therefore, interactive hands‐on implementation courses have the potential to enhance learning because they allow learners to strengthen their memory and reinforce their learning through practical practice. However, the current implementation of traditional multimedia environments for hands‐on practical courses falls short in simulating comprehensive hands‐on learning experiences, especially in activities that necessitate extensive interaction with the learning environment and materials (Turkay, 2022). As a result, learners are unable to genuinely engage in hands‐on learning activities within simulated environments, potentially hindering their ability to effectively tackle real‐world scenarios in the future (Johnson‐Glenberg et al, 2021), and even affecting engagement.…”
