Comparison of Effect of 5 Recumbent Positions on Autonomic Nervous Modulation in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease

Abstract: BackgroundThis study compared the effect of 5 recumbent positions on cardiac autonomic nervous modulation in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods and ResultsSpectral heart rate variability analysis was performed on 33 CAD patients and 17 patients with patent coronary arteries in random order in 5 positions; namely, supine, right lateral decubitus, left lateral decubitus, left prone and right prone positions. In the right lateral decubitus position, the vagal modulation was the highest and the s… Show more

“…[17][18][19] Power spectral analysis of the HRV components allows separate estimation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic effects on the heart and allows quantitative analysis of cardiac sympathovagal tone. 9,13,[20][21][22] SGB has been widely used to treat sympathetically maintained pain, vascular disease and complex regional pain syndrome involving the face and upper arms. 23,24 Also, unilateral SGB may be effective in severe chronic refractory angina and prolonged QT-syndrome, which is an electrophysiological disorder.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6] Recently, autonomic neural interventions using electronic devices have again gained the focus of attention as a potential modality for treating cardiovascular diseases resistant to conventional therapeutics. To name a few, chronic vagal nerve stimulation dramatically improves the survival of chronic heart failure after myocardial infarction in rats.…”

“…Parasympathetic activation was the lowest in the supine position [79]. This study suggests that lying on your right side when sleeping is likely to be best for stimulating the VN.…”
