Comparison of efficacy of two different silicone hydrogel bandage contact lenses after T-PRK

Abstract: AIM: To compare the efficacy between two different silicone hydrogel bandage contact lenses after transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (T-PRK). METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, a total of 89 patients (178 eyes) who underwent T-PRK at the Qingdao Eye Hospital from October to December 2019 were selected. One random eye wore a Senofilcon A bandage contact lens after surgery, and the other eye a Balafilcon A bandage contact lens. Pain scores, uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), spherical equivale… Show more

“…However, Senofilcon A bandage contact lenses were associated with less pain in the first few days after surgery and were more comfortable to use after Transepithelial-PRK (T-PRK). They speculated that the edge design of BCLs and the mobility of the lens on the de-epithelized cornea may play a role in early postoperative pain outcomes [36]. A possible reason for the lack of visual rehabilitation difference observed between their study and the present study could be that they preferred T-PRK instead of alcohol-assisted epithelial debridement, which may have influenced the outcomes.…”

“…Silicone hydrogel lenses possess an oxygen permeability 5 to 6 times as high as that of hydrogel lenses [12] and are suitable for continuous wearing with better comfort. Appllications of silicone hydrogel lenses as bandage lenses have been reported effective after LASEK and T-PRK associated with less pain and more comfort [3,13]. However, there are also studies suggestting that patients felt less discomfort in eyes treated with a BCL after FS-LASIK than in control eyes and the tting of a silicone-hydrogel BCL after uneventful LASIK provoked morphological changes in theocular structures that may lead to a worse UCVA outcome [14,15].…”
