Comparison of Electrochemical Immunosensors and Aptasensors for Detection of Small Organic Molecules in Environment, Food Safety, Clinical and Public Security

Abstract: We review here the most frequently reported targets among the electrochemical immunosensors and aptasensors: antibiotics, bisphenol A, cocaine, ochratoxin A and estradiol. In each case, the immobilization procedures are described as well as the transduction schemes and the limits of detection. It is shown that limits of detections are generally two to three orders of magnitude lower for immunosensors than for aptasensors, due to the highest affinities of antibodies. No significant progresses have been made to … Show more

“…Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) has been extensively employed in the characterization of the electrical properties of SPEs combined with nanomaterials, which are used as sensors for voltammetric, amperometric or potentiometric detections . The majority of SPE sensors that use EIS as a detection method are those based on the immobilization of a biological recognition element on the surface, such as enzymatic sensors, aptasensors and immunosensors . In these cases, the impedimetric detection consists of an increase of the charge transfer resistance (R CT ) due to the strong and specific binding of the analyte to the surface.…”

“…Aptasensors are biosensors in which the biological recognition elements are DNA or RNA aptamers. 159 In recent years, more and more aptasensors have been designed for possible diagnostic applications. Major detection methods include (a) optical transduction, (b) electrochemical detection and (c) mass sensitive detection.…”

“…Biosensors using an aptamer as a recognition element are called "aptasensors". According to Piro et al (2016), the sensitivity of immunosensors seems to be often better than the sensitivity of aptasensors [69]. However, recent progress in transduction and signal amplification has led to the development of many sensitive aptasensors.…”
