Comparison of Electromagnetic Characteristics of Single-Phase Induction Motor between Balanced and Unbalanced Operation under Different Loads

Abstract: This paper varies load conditions in a single-phase induction motor and deals with consequent effects on the electromagnetic characteristics in terms of a balanced and unbalanced operation. Based on a balanced-load condition, the magnetic field, electromagnetic losses, magnetic torque are quantified by the time-stepping finite element method at six different loads. The spatial distribution of the air-gap magnetic field are investigated to characterize the existence between the load variation and unbalanced ope… Show more

“…The single-phase induction motor has two windings in the stator [15,33,34], while the rotor has a standard squirrel cage. The first winding is the main winding (or run winding) and the second winding is an auxiliary winding (or start winding) [35][36][37][38], these windings are displaced in space by 90° electrical degrees], the auxiliary winding operates only during the brief period when the motor starts up when it is unplugged from the power source by a centrifugal switch [39].…”

“…Single-phase motors are favored not only for their compatibility with household appliances [6,7] but also due to their cost-effectiveness compared to three-phase motors. However, single-phase motors have inherent limitations in terms of efficiency and are susceptible to high torque ripple as a result of their operating principle [9].…”

“…They are commonly used in appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners, as well as in air compressors, pumping systems, and other types of machinery [5,8]. However, their efficiency and torque ripple are compromised at a low load due to load variation [9].…”
