Comparison of Elisa and Rapid Immunochromatographic Tests in Diagnosis of Toxoplasmosis in Port Harcourt, Nigeria

Abstract: Toxoplasmosis is a neglected tropical disease with a global distribution that is estimated to infect one third of the world’s human population. This study was a comparison of ELISA and rapid Immunochromatographic tests (ICT) in diagnosis of toxoplasmosis in Port Harcourt Nigeria. Eight hundred patients grouped in four categories from three Health Care Centres were randomly sampled after due ethical approval was obtained. Samples were analysed using Toxo IgG-IgM rapid test (ICT) and Enzyme linked Immunosorbent … Show more

[8][9][10] The overall prevalence of 2.6% HIV recorded was lesser than that of 8.4% reported by Eaton in 2014, 67% recorded in Ethiopia 11 but higher than that of 0.36% in Benin city, 0.28% in Bendel State 12 and 1.58% in Lesotho. 13 The co-infection of 1.5% in the study is lesser than that of 25.1% in Asia, 49.1% in Latin and Caribbean and 60.7% in North America and Middle East.…”

“…The differences observed between the infection rates reported by the health facilities in our study and those obtained at the LIM of the CIRCB, using the same methods and on the same samples, illustrate the difficulties in interpreting serological results for toxoplasmosis [ 13 ]. In Batch1, the sensitivity of the RDT (12%) for IgG detection is much lower than the 54.4% obtained in Egypt [ 33 ], the 46.7% found in Nigeria [ 34 ], and the 96% obtained at LIM/CIRCB with the same technique. These differences could be related to the handling conditions on the one hand and the quality of the kits used on the other.…”

“…Each individual had 2 ml of blood drawn from them via venipuncture into an uncomplicated tube under aseptic conditions. Sample was centrifuged to obtain serum which was used for laboratory analysis using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for chlamydia IgG antibodies determination, catalogue number BC-1071 purchased from Bio check with MAP LAB plus microwell reader [15,16]. The sensitivity and specificity of IgG antibody test for Chlamydia trachomatis is 100% and 97.6% respectively, [17].…”
