Comparison of endoscopic and pathological findings of the upper gastrointestinal tract in transplant candidate patients undergoing hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis treatment: a review of literature

Abstract: Background Dyspepsia is a common disorder in kidney transplant recipients, and the risk of post-transplant complications is increased in candidates with upper gastrointestinal disease. We evaluated gastrointestinal lesions of kidney transplant candidates on dialysis. Methods In this study, endoscopic and pathological findings in hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients with gastrointestinal symptoms on the waiting list were compared. Results The most common non-ulcerous lesions in the endosc… Show more

“…Misra et al [ 18 ] found that GIS abnormalities were more common in patients with CKD in a study that they evaluated the endoscopic findings in patients with CKD and compared them with normal individuals. In terms of gastritis prevalence, Usta et al [ 19 ] determined the frequency of histological gastritis as 62.3% in dialysis patients, Fabian et al [ 20 ] determined the frequency of histological gastritis was 71.5%, Al-Mueilo et al [ 21 ] found the frequency of histological gastritis 51.9% in hemodialysis patients. In our study, the patients were evaluated symptomatically in terms of gastritis and compared according to the RRT modality.…”

“…Patients with ESKD have lower gastric pH and higher gastrin levels than people without kidney failure in some but not all studies. [20][21][22] Hypergastrinemia has been associated with an inability to wean PPIs in the general population. 2 Although much has been written about the potential harms of PPIs, little has been written about the potential harms associated with discontinuing this class of medications.…”

“…Nevertheless, the available literature data on the HP presence in hemodialysis patients are quite unequal with a wide range of variation (20-80%) (14,15). There are also different opinions on the frequency of gastroduodenal lesions in hemodialysis CKD patients compared to non-CKD subjects (16). Some authors reported that hemodialysis patients suffered more often from gastroduodenal disorders while the others not found the differences between hemodialysis and the general population (13,17,18).…”
