“…Nowadays, the most important vectors are considered to be A. sacharovi which is responsible for the majority of Plasmodium vivax transmissions in the Asian part of Turkey (Kasap 1990) and A. labranchiae, formerly the main vector of malaria in Italy (Bruce-Chwatt and de Zulueta 1980). To identify where a new malaria epidemic could occur theoretically and how it would spread, and to provide advice for control strategies, reliable and ecient mosquito identi®cation techniques and data on vector distribution are required.…”

“…Laboratory colonies An. superpictus have been infected with P. vivax-infected humans; oocysts and sporozoites were in salivary glands (Kasap, 1990). This species seems to be generally implicated as a vivax vector in other articles.…”

“…Under laboratory conditions, An. sacharovi has been demonstrated as an excellent vector of P. vivax (Kasap, 1990) and An. messeae was reported, not only as being the main vector of malaria over a large part of European Russia several decades ago (Detinova, 1953), but also the responsible of disease resurgence in Russia and Ukraine more recently (Nikolaeva, 1996).…”

“…An. superpictus can transmit P. vivax (Kasap, 1990) but its susceptibility to P. falciparum has not been tested, although this anopheline is probably sensitive, as it belongs to the subgenus Cellia, to which the principal African malaria vectors also belong. Another species of the subgenus Cellia poorly represented in Europe, such as Anopheles multicolor and Anopheles sergentii, have been also found parasitized by P. vivax and P. falciparum in natural conditions (Kenawy et al, 1990).…”
