Background The Hispanic/Latin American population is the fastest growing non‐Caucasian group in the United States. Within this group, demand for aesthetic procedures is on the rise. High ethnic variability among these patients influences treatment approaches and patient priorities. Understanding these ethnic differences is central to providing optimal care. Aims To discuss similarities and differences in anatomy and treatment preferences of Hispanic/Latin American patients both within the United States and internationally and explore how these differences may influence or inform aesthetic practices. Patients/Methods In support of clinicians who wish to serve a diverse patient population, a 6‐part, international roundtable series focused on diversity in aesthetics was conducted from August 24, 2021 to May 16, 2022. In this roundtable, held in Medellin, Columbia, expert clinicians from across Latin America and the United States were invited to contribute and share best practices. Results The results of the second roundtable in the series, the Latin American Patient, are described here. A special emphasis is placed on procedures that address the most commonly encountered concerns in these patients. Conclusions Hispanic and Latino patients represent a broad demographic with unique anatomical features, aesthetic preferences, and treatment priorities. Clinicians should consider these differences when treating this patient population.

The aim of this study was to determine the factors that affect esthetic preference regarding the perceived facial attractiveness of young Korean female adults with a normal skeletal pattern using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). After reorienting the CBCT images of 40 young Korean female adults, three-dimensional (3D) measurements were analyzed, and five 3D facial images were digitally constructed. A computer-based questionnaire was used to determine perceived facial attractiveness by scoring from 1 (very unattractive) to 10 (very attractive). Esthetic perception and the most influential facial view and component were examined and compared by orthodontists, general dentists, and laypeople to evaluate facial attractiveness. Compared to the unattractive group, the attractive group had significantly greater values for Pog-NB, L1SI-FH, U lip thickness, L lip-U lip, and Nasolabial angle, along with significantly lower values for U1SI-FH and Cant of U lip; the attractive group also had a more retruded U1MP (p < 0.01), L1MP (p < 0.01), U lip (p < 0.05), and L lip (p < 0.01) relative to N, as well as a more retruded U lip (p < 0.05) and L lip (p <0.001) relative to esthetic lines. Orthodontists and general dentists were more likely to consider the profile view. When evaluating facial attractiveness, orthodontists and laypeople more often focused on the lips and chin. When evaluating facial attractiveness, all evaluators showed a high esthetic preference for retroclination and retrusion of the incisors and lips, but there were some differences in how they perceived facial attractiveness. Therefore, the ultimate perception of facial attractiveness needs to be based on the esthetic perceptions of laypeople.

El edentulismo es una condición irreversible. La pérdida dental encuentra conexión con los discursos positivos del envejecimiento, así como unas amplias repercusiones en estos, que han cobrado fuerza hacia finales del siglo XX y principios del siglo XXI, limitando procesos de participación social, generando cambios en la calidad de vida, teniendo una articulación fuerte con las relaciones biológicas de las personas y siendo altamente inequitativo entre grupos sociales. Dado lo anterior, el presente artículo pretende desarrollar y argumentar tres ideas clave para sustentar que el envejecimiento desde el discurso positivo se ve limitado cuando la persona no tiene dientes: la primera es que la vida sin dientes restringe el desarrollo personal y social, la siguiente es que la conexión de la cavidad oral con las condiciones biológicas es muy estrecha y la tercera es la estereotipación y el juzgamiento del viejo edéntulo en la sociedad actual. Las ideas sustentadas argumentaron y soportaron la necesidad de dar importancia a la condición de ser edéntulo en el marco de un envejecimiento positivo y como intervención en salud pública. Envejecer bien es la bandera de las políticas mundiales, incluyendo la Década del Envejecimiento Saludable (2020-2030); el entender y la cohesión de la salud en todas sus disciplinas es trascendental en pro del viejo actual y del logro de su gerotrascendencia. La geriatría, la gerontología, la salud pública e incluso la misma odontología, hoy más que nunca, deben trabajar en favor de la mitigación de la aparición del edentulismo en las sociedades actuales.
