Comparison of four hematology analyzers, CELL‐DYN Sapphire, ADVIA 120, Coulter LH 750, and Sysmex XE‐2100, in terms of clinical usefulness

Abstract: Summary We evaluated the clinical usefulness (leukocyte distribution classification, morphologic classification, and morphologic flags) of the following four hematology analyzers: CELL‐DYN Sapphire (CD‐Sapphire) (Abbott Diagnostics, Santa Clara, CA, USA), ADVIA 120 (Bayer Diagnostics, Tarrytown, NY, USA), Beckman Coulter LH 750 (Beckman Coulter, Miami, FL, USA), and Sysmex XE‐2100 (TOA Medical Electronics Co., Kobe, Japan). Four hundred thirty samples from patients and 100 samples from healthy individuals were… Show more

“…The high sensitivity of Sysmex XE‐2100 blast flag has been reported in comparison with the other analyzers. Such a finding has been related to the false‐positive results . Our observation is in line with the previous studies, which were performed on adults' peripheral blood.…”

“…Even extrapolating our results to those using ADVIA analyzers is problematic because of blast flag interlaboratory variation. In our study, the frequencies of blast flags in those without acute leukemia in both settings were low, whereas others have reported the frequency of blast flags to be 14.2% and 51% in such patients, most likely due to analyzer variation. Furthermore, our study did not examined the influence of the smear review findings on the identification of diseases other than acute leukemia.…”

“…It has been published the new extended RBC parameters as measured on CELL-DYN Sapphire show a high degree of correlation with those of the Advia analyzers, although the absolute values may differ [42, 43]. This renders it necessary to establish instrument-specific reference ranges and clinical decision values [44, 45].…”
