Comparison of hand-sewn and stapled anastomoses in surgeries of gastrointestinal tumors based on clinical practice of China

Abstract: BackgroundThere is a lack of studies comparing stapled suturing and hand-sewn suturing in the surgeries of gastrointestinal tumors based on the clinical practice of Chinese surgeons.MethodsData were retrospectively collected from 499 patients who underwent surgery to remove gastrointestinal tumors from January 2008 to December 2009. The patients were divided into two groups according to the method of digestive tract reconstruction: 296 patients received stapled suturing and 203 patients received hand-sewn sutu… Show more

“…During the field research of literature for colonic and colorectal anastomotic techniques, were found several articles promoting stapled procedures, sustaining that mechanical suture presents a lower incidence of anastomotic leak (20). Investigating similar scientific articles there can be found opposite perspectives to ours, affirming that stapled procedure should be preferred for anastomosis after ileocolic resection (21).…”

“…However, it was somewhat different on the spectrum of complications between the two countries. Differences in comorbidities, diverse habits of operation, varied operative procedures, and different proportions of reconstruction, resection type or minimal invasive surgery were considered to be associated with the discrepancies (51)(52)(53)(54)(55).…”

“…Generally, mechanical anastomoses were utilized in a higher percentage over the handsewn technique, but neither of these two methods had a major influence on fistula formation. Liu et al [ 7 ] report similar results for the two techniques with more benefits for stapled procedure.…”
