Comparison of HDO measurements from Envisat/MIPAS with observations by Odin/SMR and SCISAT/ACE-FTS

Abstract: Abstract. Measurements of thermal emission in the midinfrared by Envisat/MIPAS allow the retrieval of HDO information roughly in the altitude range between 10 km and 50 km. From June 2002 to March 2004 MIPAS performed measurements in the full spectral resolution mode. To assess the quality of the HDO data set obtained during that period comparisons with measurements by Odin/SMR and SCISAT/ACE-FTS were performed. Comparisons were made on profile-to-profile basis as well as using seasonal and monthly averages. A… Show more

“…Furthermore, there are space-borne scientific sensors that measure middle tropospheric δD (Worden et al, 2007) and δD at and above the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (e.g. Steinwagner et al, 2007;Payne et al, 2007;Lossow et al, 2011). Most recently, middle tropospheric δD products applying the operational meteorological satellite sensor IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) have been presented by Schneider and Hase (2011a), Lacour et al (2012), and Pommier et al (2014).…”

“…The data are filtered to omit profiles with visibility flag equal 0 (indicating clouds) and diagonal elements of the AVK smaller than 0.03, as described by e.g. Lossow et al (2011). We excluded all profiles with these values between 10 and 25 km height.…”

“…Comparison between different sets of δD have been performed before - Lossow et al (2011) compared between retrievals from different satellite sensors (Envisat/MIPAS, Odin/SMR, SCISAT/ACE-FTS), Schneider andHase (2011) compared IASI andNDACC FTIR retrievals, Boesch et al (2013) compared GOSAT short-wave infrared and TCCON FTIR retrievals, and Worden et al (2011) compared TES retrievals with in situ measurements. Here, we intercompare two independent data sources (PICARRO and FTIR) using the outputs of the ECHAM5-wiso isotopic AGCM (T63) that has been run in a nudged version using ERA-Interim reanalysis fields (Dee et al, 2011;Berrisford et al, 2009).…”
