Comparison of IgE‐binding antigens in horse dander and a mixture of horse hair and skin scrapings

Abstract: Extracts of horse dander (HD) and horse hair and skin scrapings (HHSS) have been compared with respect to their content of proteins and carbohydrates. The protein content of HD is more than double that of HHSS, while the carbohydrate content is of the same order. SDS-PAGE and IEF, both combined with immunoblotting, and CIE/CRIE showed the IgE-binding ability of the proteins/glycoproteins present in the two extracts. SDS-PAGE/immunoblotting showed the presence of mainly the same IgE-binding bands in the two ext… Show more

“…ESA has not been well characterized in terms of epitopes (Fjeldsgaard and Paulsen, 1993; Ponterius et al, 1973). Three tryptic peptides of ESA (corresponding to residues 21–113, 188–275, and 503–560) have been isolated and characterized (Goubran Botros et al, 1996).…”

“…Horse hair has a strong allergenicity [1, 2] and horse allergy is an important problem in a young urban population [2, 3]. On exposure, horses can cause a wide range of clinical symptoms from urticaria to respiratory distress in sensitized individuals [2–4].…”

“…Several allergens have been described in extracts prepared from horse dander, hair, skin scrapings and serum [102, 103, 104, 105, 106]. Three major allergens with MWs of 19, 31 and 51 kD have been described [107].…”
