Comparison of immediate effects between two medical stretching techniques on Hamstrings flexibility

Abstract: [Purpose] The aim of this study was to compare immediate effects between new medical stretching (NMS) and conventional medical stretching (CMS) techniques on Hamstrings flexibility. [Subjects and Methods] Thirteen healthy adult males, with finger floor distance (FFD) less than zero centimeter, without known musculoskeletal and neurological impairment in spine or lower extremities, were included. The subjects were randomly allocated to two groups. The subjects were instructed to perform NMS and CMS (hold for 30… Show more

“…However, their study was conducted in healthy individuals; in our study, CLBP and associated psychosocial factors could have limited the improvement in HM flexibility following stretching either by inhibiting motor control mechanisms, decreasing stretch tolerance [ [34] , [35] , [36] , [37] ] or by fear and anxiety symptoms. Similarly, a greater immediate effect of HM stretching on FTF distance was found in healthy individuals than in our study (mean difference 5–6 cm) [ 18 ]. In people with non-specific LBP, the sit and reach test results improved immediately after HM stretching procedures [ 21 ].…”

“…Repeated HM stretching sessions improve HM flexibility [ 17 ]. Moreover, in healthy people, the result is immediate [ 18 , 19 ]. When combined with core stability exercises, repeated HM stretching improves physical function and decreases pain in people with CLBP [ 20 ].…”

“…The participants needed to stand with the heels kept together and big toes 5 cm apart, put the fingertips on the cursor of the instrument, and bend the body gradually forward without bending the knees, so that the cursor was pushed downwards. The value at the point on the scale corresponding to the upper surface of the cursor was read and recorded 19) .…”

“…These are fundamental in sports programs, considering their impact on muscle contractile properties. Initial treatment objectives often focus on reducing muscle bleeding and controlling inflammation through methods like cryotherapy and compression bandages (13,15). Moreover, the involvement of neural tissues, such as the sciatic nerve, in hamstring flexibility has been recognized, with prolonged sitting and standing contributing to tightness (16).…”
