Comparison of in vitro antibacterial activity of streptomycin-diclofenac loaded composite biomaterial dressings with commercial silver based antimicrobial wound dressings

Abstract: Infected chronic wounds heal slowly, exhibiting prolonged inflammation, biofilm formation, bacterial resistance, high exudate and ineffectiveness of systemic antimicrobials. Composite dressings (films and wafers) comprising polyox/carrageenan (POL-CAR) and polyox/sodium alginate (POL-SA), loaded with diclofenac (DLF) and streptomycin (STP) were formulated and tested for antibacterial activity against 2 x 10 5 CFU/mL of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus representing infected chr… Show more

“…When placed on growth media, films absorb water, undergo swelling, and release loaded antibiotics, similar to when films are placed on infected wounds. Therefore, the higher antibacterial activity of AX-GL films indicates the ability of these films to maintain the effective concentration of GM in the wound environment for a longer period of time [41]. These results suggest that the antibacterial performance of the GM-loaded AX-GL…”

“…In the present study, the replacement of the Eagle's minimum essential medium every two days and the supplementation with penicillin and streptomycin also increased the survival time of N. buttnerae for up to 42 days when maintained at 24 °C. The antibiotics penicillin and streptomycin are frequently used in the control of bacterial growth (Pawar et al, 2019;Ulkhaq et al, 2020). The combination of penicillin and streptomycin is promising, since penicillin has shown greater efficacy against gram-positive bacteria and streptomycin is more active against aerobic gramnegative bacteria (Madigan et al, 2016).…”

“…Alginate dressings are obtained from soft, nonwoven alginic acid fibers, a cellulose-like polysaccharide derived from seaweed, coated in calcium and sodium salts [63]. They have the capacity to form gels at the time of contact with wound exudates, which permits easier dressing removal [145]. Alginate dressings are indicated for moderate to heavily exuding wounds.…”
