Comparison of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy by Electrocardiography and Echocardiography in Children Using Analytics Tool

Abstract: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a common finding on pediatric electrocardiography (ECG) leading to many referrals for echocardiography (echo). This study utilizes a novel analytics tool that combines ECG and echo databases to evaluate ECG as a screening tool for LVH. SQL Server 2012 data warehouse incorporated ECG and echo databases for all patients from a single institution from 2006 to 2016. Customized queries identified patients 0-18 years old with LVH on ECG and an echo performed within 24 h. Using d… Show more

“…It is easier for medical personnel to understand the disease dynamics of children and to change medicine when they have access to a comprehensive electronic medical record. It is also a valuable source of information for medical researchers conducting studies [28][29][30][31][32].…”

“…This novel analytics tool enabled us to mine, within minutes, two separate large databases and create a unified database for further analysis. 10 Patients aged 2-18 years with an electrocardiogram and echocardiogram on the same date were included. Race was classified as Caucasian, African American, and other.…”

“…9 Furthermore, findings of left ventricular hypertrophy on electrocardiogram remain a common reason for referral to paediatric cardiology clinic despite studies showing that it is a poor diagnostic tool compared to echocardiography, when used alone, to detect left ventricular hypertrophy. 10 Prior studies evaluating left ventricular hypertrophy in paediatrics have been limited by sample size and cumbersome manual methods. To access and incorporate a large amount of data from two separate databases, we used a novel data analytics technology that combines patient specific data across multiple diagnostic modalities.…”

“…We conducted a retrospective study of pregnancies affected by autoimmune mediated fetal CAVB encountered at Children's National Medical Center Fetal Heart Program from January 2005 to December 2017. Institutional databases using Crystal Reports (SAP SE, Walldorf, Germany) and a Structural Query Language Server integrated with echocardiogram data (Xcelera, Philips, Amsterdam, Netherlands) were queried. Fetal studies containing billing codes for “bradycardia” or “third degree atrioventricular block” were extracted; those with heterotaxy syndrome and/or coexistent complex significant intracardiac structural anomaly were excluded.…”
