Comparison of Macular Thickness in Patients with Keratoconus and Control Subjects Using the Cirrus HD-OCT

Abstract: Purpose. The aim of the present study was to compare macular thickness in patients with keratoconus (KC) with macular thickness in healthy subjects. Subjects and Methods. Twenty-six patients with KC and 52 control subjects were included. The macular structure was evaluated using a Zeiss Cirrus HD-OCT. The scan pattern used was 512 × 128, which covers an area of approximately 6 × 6 mm of the retina. The cube volume was assessed as well as macular thickness in each of the 9 sectors defined by the software. Resul… Show more

“…In this study, there was no significant difference in mean central foveal thickness measurements among the control and three keratoconus groups ( p = 0.199). This finding is in agreement with previous studies 11,35,48 that have also investigated and reported on central foveal thickness measurements between individuals with keratoconus and matched controls. Brautaset et al 35 reported an insignificant thickness difference of ~4 µm ( p = 0.491) with a Cirrus OCT device and Moschos et al 11 noted an insignificant thickness difference of ~7 µm ( p = 0.317) with a Stratus OCT device.…”

“…29 As keratoconus has been reported with other ocular conditions, including retinitis pigmentosa, 30 Leber's congenital amaurosis, 31 choroidal neovascularisation, 32 central serous chorioretinopathy 33 and Goldmann-Favre disease, 34 investigating the posterior ocular segment in individuals with keratoconus is important particularly when corneal transplantation (penetrating keratoplasty and/or deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty) is considered as a form of management. 32,35 Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate macular thicknesses in patients with keratoconus.…”

“…As such, corneal astigmatism‐induced retinal image distortion may be more pronounced in RNFL scanning, explaining the more profound influences on RNFL measurements. The discrepancy between astigmatism‐related influences on macular versus RNFL measures was also evident in keratoconic eyes 2015. Taken together, the different influences of refractive parameters on RNFL versus macular analyses may account for the fact there is an overwhelming majority of reports focusing on refractive‐dependent influences in RNFL analysis, with a paucity of reports focusing on macular analysis 2017…”

“…Совместное исследование ученых Швеции, Испании и США, посвященное измерению толщины макулярной зоны у пациентов с кератоконусом при помощи ОКТ, не выявило различий в величине данного параметра до и после операции [14]. У одного пациента с кератоконусом была диагностирована макулопатия.…”
