Comparison of neuropsychological and functional outcomes in Alzheimer's disease patients with good or bad response to a cognitive stimulation treatment: a retrospective analysis

Abstract: The response to a CS treatment of some subjects over others is linked to cognitive and functional capacity. This research contributes to characterize the neuropsychological profile that differentiates subjects who respond better than others before and after the treatment. This should contribute to customize and optimize neuropsychological interventions in patients with AD.

“…A retrospective observational study was conducted between 2004 and 2012 in 60 patients with AD who followed a 1-year cognitive stimulation program. 9 A cognitive and functional assessment was performed before and after the intervention. The MMSE scores were used to distinguish good responders (higher cognitive performance) from nonresponders (poor cognitive performance) at baseline.…”

“…semantic), recall, verbal fluency, orientation, visual skills, numeracy, auditory comprehension and motor skills (see Table 3 in Supplementary Material ). Studies using these measures argued for the importance of measuring more specific areas of cognition and memory, as generic measures might not show any effect ( Capotosto et al, 2017 ; Cavallo & Angilletta, 2017 ; da Cruz et al., 2015 ; Farina et al, 2006 ; Hall et al, 2013 ; Martinez-Moreno et al., 2016 ; Piras et al, 2017 ; Spector et al, 2003 ).…”

“…Four studies reported on the length of time for each assessment, these were identified as 45–90 min in duration ( Bergamaschi et al., 2013 ; Hall et al, 2013 ; Martinez-Moreno et al., 2016 ; Woods et al, 2006 ). Four studies reported their assessment process used individual or face-to-face interviews, with the order of the tests remaining the same across all participants ( Bergamaschi et al, 2013 ; Hall et al, 2013 ; Martinez-Moreno et al., 2016 ; Middlestadt et al., 2016 ).…”

“…All sessions are conducted by an occupational therapist and supervised by a clinical neuropsychologist who design the CS for each patient. All sessions include reality orientation therapy for 10 min, and training in attention and concentration, memory, language, calculation, gnosias, praxias, or executive function for 50 min [for more details see, 47 ].…”
