Comparison of nitrazepam 5 mg with triazolam 0.5 mg in young psychiatric insomniac inpatients DOUBLE‐BLIND SINGLE NIGHT CROSS‐OVER STUDY

Abstract: Sixty young male patients with insomniac disorders were treated with nitrazepam 5 mg or triazolam 0.5 mg in a double-blind single night cross-over study. The results were favourable for triazolam in all the sleep parameters assessed. The significance of an hypnotic with a short life and its use in clinical practice is discussed.

“…Triazolam is a short-acting and effective hypnotic (8,9,10). It's elimination half-life is 2.3 h in young individuals (11) which means that the drug does not accumulate in the body when used as a hypnotic (12).…”

“…The mean MMAT score of quality was 85%. The risk of bias across the RCTs is presented in Supplement 3. wards for older adults (54), military personnel (48) or military veterans (62). Across all included studies, there were 1034 adults, with one study not clearly reporting the sample size (54).…”

“…Of these, two focused exclusively on exercise (50,64). In contrast to several pharmacological interventions (46,48,51), a nonpharmacological intervention with three components of CBT-i (sleep hygiene/psychoeducation, stimulus control and sleep restriction) did not reduce the number of awakenings (47). However, it was associated with reduced sleep latency, reduced time awake after sleep onset, and reduced use of as required insomnia medication (47).…”

“…Triazolam has an elimination half-lie of 2.3 h (Eberts et al (1981)) and is a shortacting and effective hypnotic (Blumenthal et al (1980), Cloos et d. (1977), Roth et al (1976)). The a-hydroxy metabolite of triazolam has been shown to have some hypnotic activity in animal models, but it is short-acting (t M = 3.9 h) and the amount of nonconjugated a-hydroxy metabolite present in plasma in relation to the parent compound is very small (Eberts et al (1981)).…”
