Comparison of Nutritional and Nutraceutical Properties of Burdock Roots Cultivated in Fengxian and Peixian of China

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze and compare the nutritional quality of powders of burdock root from Fengxian (FX) and Peixian (PX) in China. The nutrient composition including carbohydrates, protein, amino acids, vitamin C, carotenoids, as well as total phenols, total flavonoids and phenolic compounds were investigated in addition to in vitro antioxidant capacity. The results showed that the basic nutrients of burdock root powder (BRP) in both locations did not have significant differences (p > 0.05), although … Show more

“…Warm and humid climates are suitable for Arctium lappa L. It mainly grows in Northeast, North, and Northwest China ( 4 ). Arctium lappa L. root is a very popular vegetable in China, which is rich in the soluble dietary fiber found in inulin, polysaccharides, polyphenols, flavonoids, arctiin, and other active ingredients ( 5 , 6 ), used as a kind of nutritive and functional food in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has very high nutritional and medicinal value, such as antioxidant, hypoglycemic, and lipid-lowering effects; immunity enhancement; bacteriostasis; and anti-inflammatory and other effects ( 7 9 ).…”

“…Burdock roots contain flavonoids, polyphenols, polysaccharides, and polyunsaturated fatty acids with biological and pharmacological functions, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-allergic, anti-ulcer, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, anti-aging, and anti-cytotoxic effects [ 4 ]. The significant constituents in the burdock roots are polysaccharides with high-levels of inulin as the dietary fiber [ 3 , 5 ] and polyphenolic compounds mainly being caffeoylquinic acids, such as chlorogenic acid (CGA, 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid) and cynarin (1,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid) [ 6 , 7 , 8 ]. CGA possesses a high antioxidant activity with health benefits for human, including antihypertensive, antidiabetic, antineurodegenerative, and antilipidemic activities [ 9 , 10 , 11 ], cynarin shows the function of intervening against glycoxidation [ 12 ], and inulin behaves positive effects on blood glucose attenuation, lipid homeostasis, mineral bioavailability and immunomodulation [ 13 ].…”

“…Hence, those bioactive compounds are worthwhile to be extracted from burdock roots in a significant content, and can be served as the nutritional supplement in foods. However, the compositions of the main bioactive compounds in burdock roots and the nutritional effect are generally subjected to the various varieties and the cultivated conditions [ 7 ].…”
