Comparison of oligo(ethylene oxide)-substituted polysiloxanes with poly(ethylene glycol) as stationary phases for capillary chromatography

Abstract: The gas chromatographic properties of a new oligo(ethylene oxlde)-substltuted (glyme) polyslloxane stationary phase and an 18-crown-6-substltuted (crown) polyslloxane phase were compared to Carbowax 20M and a bonded poly(ethylene glycol) (Bondable PEG). The glyme polyslloxane was found to have an operational temperature range of 20-280 °C and a selectivity similar to that of Carbowax 20M. The crown polyslloxane was found to have unique selectivity, partly because of the size and shape of the crown ether cavity… Show more

“…DCUP also was used in the procedure. Some different procedures have been suggested lately for immobilization of PEG by means of dicumylperoxide both without (106)(107)(108) and with additives such as silanes (109) A new immobilizable polysiloxane stationary phase having a phenyl-containing oligo(ethy1ene oxide) substitution recently was suggested as a substitute for Carbowax 20M (70). Further, a series of related polysiloxanes was recently presented (115).…”

“…The maximum temperature limit of cross-linked and bonded Carbowax-20M is only improved to 270-275°C [3]. Lee et al [4,5] reported ten years ago the synthesis and chromatographic properties of glyme polysiloxane stationary phases. The operation temperature range of these phases was 20-280°C.…”

“…Rouse et al (6) and Wu et al 0 recently prepared crown ether substituted polysiloxanes with spacers of three or eleven methylene groups between the polysiloxane backbone and crown ether groups, which showed high efficiency, high thermostability, and a unique selectivity for some compounds. In our previous work (S), a 3-propylbenzo-15-crown-5 was substituted onto a polysiloxane backbone to yield a stationary phase, which was coated on fused silica capillary columns, producing excellent separations of isomers of cresol, dimethoxybenzene, mono-and dinitrotoluene, etc.…”
