Comparison of Parent and Child Reports on Child Maltreatment in a Representative Household Sample in Hong Kong

Abstract: This study investigated and compared the rates of child maltreatment as reported by parents and children. Self-reports of 1,093 children aged 12 to 18, which were matched with both parents’ records, were compared and analyzed in the study. The levels of agreement between parent and child reporting of various kinds of parental child maltreatment were low to moderate. Factors affecting the disagreement in reports were also investigated. Social desirability and violence approval were the common predictors of disa… Show more

“…This was consistent with the past finding by Chan (2012) that lower agreement is found among severe physical victimization than less severe physical victimization. One possible explanation for this trend could be that it would be harder for adolescents to keep such severe incidents secret.…”

“…When taking into considerations of the possibility that the parents are not aware of the victimization because their children are reluctant to disclose (Mishna, 2004), it was also hypothesized that there would be a significant disagreement between reports in situations where the perpetrator was someone other than the child's parents. With reference to the previous findings that demographic factors, interparental conflicts, and child health status may be associated with discrepancies in reporting of child maltreatment (Chan, 2012;Lee et al, 2012), this study also examined the effects of demographic background and intimate partner violence (IPV) between parents, as well as the child's depression and problematic behaviors, on discrepancies in the reporting of child victimization. According to the previous findings that the discrepancies might be greater among children with behavioral and health problems (Lee et al, 2012), it was hypothesized that child depression and addictive behaviors would be associated to a greater disagreement between reports.…”

“…However, the use of child reports without comparison with adult reports may also be problematic, since abused and neglected children tend to underreport the abuse or neglect experienced because they feel a sense of loyalty to parent (18)(19)(20). Thus, some studies in the child maltreatment literature found substantial differences between child and parent reports (21), while others revealed moderate agreement levels (22). Considering these concerns about the reliability of reports from a single information source (either child or parent), this study aims to achieve a more balanced view comparing data from both groups in order to examine the consistency of responses.…”

“…For example, the “employment” item of LSSC may be heavily influenced by financial security for some whereas others may respond in terms of the way they are treated on the job. It is important to indicate that many measures of child neglect and drug abuse are designed to solicit problems and personal deficits that may be stigmatizing, leading some respondents to feel compelled to provide false information that presents themselves in an overly favorable light (Chan, 2012; Stowman & Donohue, 2005). Therefore, the LSSC may assist the assessment of accurate information in the studied population, as its response set is designed to yield statements and ratings that are designed to facilitate positive goals.…”
