Abstract: Primary Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV) infection occasionally causes EBV‐infectious mononucleosis (EBV‐IM) and EBV‐hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV‐HLH). Although EBV‐IM is mostly mild and self‐limiting, EBV‐HLH is a life‐threatening disease characterized by excessive immune activation.
