Comparison of postoperative quality of life for patients who undergo atrial myxoma excision with robotically assisted versus conventional surgery

Abstract: The level of restoration of normal QOL within 30 days after atrial myxoma surgery is excellent with the robotically assisted approach, which may enable early return to employment and satisfactory recovery.

“…The in-hospital mortality, para-operative complications, and six-month MAEs of the three groups had no differences according to our experience. In our previous study [17], patients who accepted robotic-assisted myxoma resection had a better quality of life after their operation and went back to work much earlier compared with patients who had a conventional surgical procedure. However, we believe that it is more sensible to perform traditional open chest surgery on patients who have complex cardiac comorbidities, poor heart function, emergency status, and re-do operations.…”

“…Murphy et al (4) performed the first successful robotic myxoma excision in 2005. Current literature also suggests that endoscopic myxoma surgery can be performed safely, with excellent results and patient outcome in addition to many other advantages (5).…”

“…Following conventional cardiac surgery, sternal stability is one of the most important factors for an uneventful outcome (3,5). Avoiding median sternotomy with robotic surgery provides a more flexible patient care option following cardiac surgery.…”

“…Since most young adult patients are uneasy about the surgical wound, minimally invasive surgery is often sought by them. Although robotic cardiac surgery remains controversial due to steep learning curves, high expenses, long operation time, and highly selected patients, it has been developed over the last decade and is shown to improve cosmesis and quality of life after surgery [4]. We initiated the surgical repair of AVSD in 2011 and completed three cases so far.…”
