Abstract. Pore water pressure build-up by recharge of underground hydrosystems is one of the main triggering factors of deep-seated landslides. In most deep-seated landslides, pore water pressure data are not available since piezometers, if any, have a very short lifespan because of slope movements. As a consequence, indirect parameters, such as the calculated recharge, are the only data which enable understanding landslide hydrodynamic behaviour. However, in landslide studies, methods and recharge-area parameters used to determine the groundwater recharge are rarely detailed. In this study, the groundwater recharge is estimated with a soil-water balance based on characterisation of evapotranspiration and parameters characterising the recharge area (soil available water capacity, runoff and vegetation coefficient). A workflow to compute daily groundwater recharge is developed. This workflow requires the records of precipitation, air temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and wind speed within or close to the landslide area. The determination of the parameters of the recharge area is based on a spatial analysis requiring field observations and spatial data sets (digital elevation models, aerial photographs and geological maps). This study demonstrates that the performance of the correlation with landslide displacement velocity data is significantly improved using the recharge estimated with the proposed workflow. The coefficient of determination obtained with the recharge estimated with the proposed workflow is 78 % higher on average than that obtained with precipitation, and is 38 % higher on average than that obtained with recharge computed with a commonly used simplification in landslide studies (recharge = precipitation minus non-calibrated evapotranspiration method).

Five representative reference evapotranspiration(RET) equations were selected, and these equations were compared with pan evaporation by correlation analysis. Pan coefficients were also estimated.Furthermore, five selected RET equations were compared to find the similarity among those at the 21 meteorological stations located in South Korea. Five RET equations selected from 4 different category were Penman(combination approach), FAO Penman-Monteith(FAO P-M) (single source approach), Makkink and Priestley-Taylor (radiation approach) and Hargreaves(temperature approach) equations. In this study, the geographical and topographical conditions were considered for the selection of study stations. The daily meteorological data measured from 1970 at an interval of 5 years were applied in this study. The evapotranspiration estimates obtained by applying evapotranspiration equations were evaluated with numerical and graphical methods. The correlation coefficients between pan evaporation and RET in study stations were above 0.9 indicating very high correlation; however, the slopes of the individual regression lines show the values greater or less than 1.0. Hargreaves equation(temperature approach) shows the most similar evapotranspiration estimates to those of FAO P-M equation from 12 study stations, which are located near to seashore except Daegu station. On the other hand, Priestley-Taylor equation(radiation approach) shows the most similar evapotranspiration estimates to those of FAO P-M equation from 8 study stations, which are located in inland.

Abstract:This paper compares different procedures for mapping reference evapotranspiration (ET o ) by means of regression-based techniques and geographical information systems (GIS). ET o is calculated following the method of Hargreaves (HG) from a dense database of meteorological stations in the northernmost semi-arid region of Europe, the Ebro valley. The HG method requires the calculation of estimates of extraterrestrial radiation (R a ). We calculated this parameter using two approaches: (1) the common approach that assumes a planar surface and determines the parameter as a function of latitude and (2) using a digital terrain model (DTM) and GIS modelling. The maps were made on a monthly basis using both approaches. We also compared possible propagations of errors in the map calculations for maps derived from modelled layers of maximum and minimum temperatures with those modelled using previously determined local ET o calculations. We demonstrate that calculations of R a from a DTM and GIS modelling provide a more realistic spatial distribution of ET o than those derived by only considering latitude. It is also preferable to model in advance the variables involved in the calculation of ET o (temperature and R a ) and to subsequently calculate ET o by means of layer algebra in the GIS rather than directly model the local ET o calculations. The obtained maps are useful for the purposes of agriculture and ecological and water resources management in the study area.
