A microcosm experiment that addressed the interaction between eutrophication processes and contaminants was analyzed using a food web model. Both direct and indirect effects of nutrient additions and a single insecticide application (chlorpyrifos) on biomass dynamics and recovery of functional groups were modeled. Direct toxicant effects on sensitive arthropods could be predicted reasonably well using concentration-response relationships from the laboratory with representative species. Model predictions showed that nutrient additions alone caused only small effects on toxicant fate and effects probably due to the relatively high dissipation rate of chlorpyrifos. Enhancement of eutrophication effects by the insecticide was relatively small and seemed to be additive. The recovery of some affected functional groups was hampered in the indoor microcosms due to their isolation from outdoor seed populations. Introducing recolonization scenarios in the model simulated dose-dependent recovery. Recolonization increased the recovering rate after exposure to the pesticide. Modeling can extend the use of microcosms as a link between laboratory and field as this allows the prediction of effects and recovery of ecosystems for concentrations that have not been experimentally tested.

Abstract-Effects of the insecticide chlorpyrifos (cpf) on young (Ͻ1 d old) and adult (7-9 d old) Daphnia pulex and the ability of D. pulex to recover after exposure were tested in the laboratory. Populations of D. pulex exposed to cpf were studied in the laboratory and field. In the field, cpf was applied in a single dose. The effects of that dose on D. pulex populations were tested and compared with the effects of a simulated single dose and its ensuing decay on populations in the laboratory. The lowest no-observed-effect concentration was about 0.05 g/L (actual concentration). Chlorpyrifos immobilized D. pulex several days before death. Juveniles became immobilized faster than adults. Even when no longer exposed, D. pulex immobilized by cpf died. In the laboratory and field, observed population dynamics and effects of cpf on these dynamics were very similar. The median effective concentration for population size after 2 and 7 d of exposure did not differ between the laboratory and field (2 d, 0.38 and 0.31 g/L, respectively; 7 d, 0.25 and 0.34 g/L, respectively). Effects of cpf on single-species Daphnia populations in the laboratory and field can be predicted from effects observed in tests with individuals.

Primer registro de Cloeon dipterum (L.) (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) en Buenos Aires, Argentina RESUMEN. Cloeon dipterum (L.) (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) está ampliamente distribuido en las zonas templadas de Eurasia, sin embargo, está restringido en América del Norte a tres estados de Estados Unidos y Canadá, y en América del Sur a Chile. Con el fin de confirmar nuestra hipótesis de que se introdujo recientemente en Argentina, el objetivo del presente estudio fue identificar la especie en base a análisis moleculares y caracteres morfológicos. Para ello se recolectaron ninfas de tres hábitats artificiales en diferentes localidades de la provincia de Buenos Aires y de dos arroyos afluentes del Río Luján, al noreste de Buenos Aires (Argentina). Todas las ninfas fueron identificadas como C. dipterum, lo que confirma la presencia de la especie en Argentina. La distribución de C. dipterum en Buenos Aires junto a su ausencia en los sitios previamente muestreados de manera regular, indicarían que los individuos registrados son introducidos y están bien establecidos en la zona de estudio. (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) is widely distributed in temperate areas of Eurasia, whereas, in North America, it is restricted to three states of the USA and Canada, and, in South America to Chile. To confirm our hypothesis that C. dipterum has been recently introduced in Argentina, the aim of the present study was to identify the species based on molecular analyses and morphological features. To this end, nymphs were collected from three artificial habitats located in different localities of Buenos Aires province and two tributary streams of the Luján River, northeast of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Nymphs were all identified as belonging to C. dipterum thus confirming the presence of the species in Argentina. The distribution of C. dipterum in Buenos Aires, together with its absence from previously sampled sites, would indicate that the individuals recorded are introduced and already well established in the study area.
