Comparison of SARS-CoV-2 (Coronavirus) with other Similar Viruses Based on Current Evidence

Abstract: The rapid spread and high mortality rate of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) have recently received worldwide attention. Understanding the pathologic features and behavior of this new virus can help control its spread. The present study aimed to compare SARS-CoV-2 with other similar viruses. This study is a systematic review of current evidence conducted in September 2020. A search was carried out utilizing the keywords in the online databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed… Show more

“…Comparing the behavior and characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 with other virus species plays a critical role in identifying patterns, predicting future behavior, and developing targeted strategies to understand the past pandemic and combat future virus outbreaks. Comparative analysis of these viruses enhances our ability to understand, control, and respond effectively to the challenges posed by SARS-CoV-2 and other virus species [ 7 , 8 ].…”

“…Understanding the behavior of SARS-CoV-2 by reviewing past pandemics and comparing SARS-CoV-2 with similar viral species, we can gain insights to better comprehend the virus’s behavior and effectively respond to it [ 7 , 8 ]. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate whether the disease severity of patients hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 infection and influenza infection is comparable.…”

“…SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) became an emerging pandemic in March 2020 and had been rapidly evolving epidemiologically [ [1] , [2] , [3] , [4] , [5] , [6] , [7] , [8] , [9] ]. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals have become unsafe for patients as potential sources of virus transmission [ [10] , [11] , [12] , [13] , [14] , [15] ]. The restriction of total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgeries is one of the consequences of the pandemic.…”

“…Recent discoveries of the sublineages BA.4 and BA.5 have raised several concerns, including greater transmissibility, greater resistance to vaccines, and an increased risk of reinfection ( 33 ). In recent studies, researchers have discovered that these two sublineages, BA.4 and BA.5, are linked to an increased risk of reinfection following vaccination and exhibit distinct pathogenic characteristics ( 34 , 35 , 36 ). Due to their ability to resist antibodies produced by vaccination and previous infection, they may cause a new wave of infection ( 34 , 35 ).…”
