Comparison of self-ligating Damon3 and conventional MBT brackets regarding alignment efficiency and pain experience: A randomized clinical trial

Abstract: Background. Self-ligating brackets might be more efficient than conventional appliance systems during the initial alignment stage of orthodontic treatment due to reduced frictional resistance. This study aimed to compare the alignment efficiency and pain experience of Damon3 self-ligating and MBT pre-adjusted brackets in the initial alignment stage. Methods. In this randomized clinical trial, 30 patients aged 14‒20 years, who needed non-extraction treatment in both maxillary and mandibular arches… Show more

“…The VAS was used in this study because it is considered a simple, applicable, and valid tool for assessing pain and other patient-centered outcomes [28][29][30]. It is also one of the most popular scales that has been used in a large number of previous studies [18,23,27]. No measurement was taken before 24 hours of the beginning of treatment to avoid the local anesthesia effect in the SLBs+P group.…”

“…The sample size was calculated using Minitab® Version 18 (Minitab Inc., State College, Pennsylvania, USA). It was assumed that the least significant difference in the pain level was 10 mm on the visual analog scale (VAS) with a standard deviation of 9.4 mm, according to Jahanbin et al's study [27]. Using an ANOVA test with a power of 85% and a significance level of 5%, 21 participants were needed in each group.…”

“…Previous studies have evaluated the influence of the bracket system used (conventional brackets, self-ligating brackets, etc.) on the pain and anxiety of orthodontic patients, with contradictory results observed between different authors ( 7 , 8 ).…”

“…The orthodontic movements are affected by friction forces between the orthodontic wire and the bracket slot [1,14,15]. The friction force values differ according to the physical characteristics and dimensions of the brackets and wires used and the binding type [13,14,16,17]. Concerning the surgical methods, the orthodontic movement acceleration results mainly from the induction of the regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP) [18][19][20][21].…”
