Comparison of seven immunoassays for the quantification of CA 125 antigen in serum

Abstract: Seven CA 125 immunoassays were compared for their clinical performance. CA 125 concentrations were determined in 289 serum samples obtained from women with benign pelvic tumors (samples from 98 patients) and patients with various cancers (samples from 111 patients). In the range of 0–1000 kilounits/L, all assays tested were linearly correlated, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.89 to 0.99. In relation to the original Centocor CA 125 assay, there was an overall tendency to measure higher absolute val… Show more

“…Another limitation of our study was that different CA 125 kits were used to assess the level of serum CA 125. However, this reflects clinical reality, and there is some evidence that the variation in CA 125 resulting from the use of different kits is not large22, 23.…”

“…A CA125 enzyme‐linked immunoassays kit is also available from Phoenix Pharmaceuticals, which detects a minimum concentration of 5 U/mL using horseradish peroxidase. Assays from a variety of manufacturers have been compared by Davelaar et al (Davelaar, Kamp, Verstraeten, & Kenemans, ). Commercially available multi‐analyte tests include immunoradiometric assays, enzyme‐linked immunoassays, and chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay provided by a range of companies and have been extensively compared by Sharma et al (Kenemans, Verstraeten, Vankamp, & Vonmensdorffpouilly, ; Sharma, Raghav, O'Kennedy, & Srivastava, ).…”
