“…Several studies have described the performances of the SO device when using the RBCX technique associated (SO/DE) or not (SO) with the depletion step for patients with SCA . These studies showed similar performance of SO compared to CSP both associated and not associated with DE.…”

“…One study selected only patients with preprocedure Hct levels of more than 26% and stable hemodynamic status . A second study required a preprocedure Hct level of 23% or more and decreased the patient's Hct up to 6% during the isovolemic hemodilution phase (if baseline Hct level was 23%‐31%) or 8% (if baseline Hct level was ≥32%) . The procedures generally were well tolerated …”

“…The RBC exchange devices available in the United States are centrifugation‐based; they rely on the density of blood constituents for separation, whereby centrifugation of whole blood results in layers, with RBCs forming the bottom layer. The most commonly used devices are the COBE Spectra and the Spectra Optia (both from Terumo BCT), the latter of which was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for RBC exchange in January 2014 and is expected to replace the COBE Spectra . This newer instrument provides touch‐screen controls, and its centrifuge interface adjustments are automated through high‐speed images compared with the manual adjustments required for the COBE.…”
