Comparison of Surgical Stripping; Erbium‐Doped:Yttrium, Aluminum, and Garnet Laser; and Carbon Dioxide Laser Techniques for Gingival Depigmentation: A Clinical and Histologic Study

Abstract: Clinical repigmentation after gingival depigmentation is an outcome of histologic changes in the melanocyte activity and density of the melanin pigments. Surgical stripping for gingival depigmentation remains the gold standard; however, Er:YAG laser and CO2 lasers can be effectively used but with distinct differences.

“…Moreover, laser irradiation seals the sensory nerve ends and inhibits the transfer of pain signals. 35 Risk of recurrence of gingival pigmentation exists in some cases of depigmentation treatment. According to the migration theory, active melanocytes migrate from the adjacent pigmented tissues to the treated areas and result in recurrence of pigmentation, of which the risk factors are not known.…”

“…Treatment plan was elaborated to the patient, and a written informed consent was acquired. The surgical procedure is as follows: local infiltration of local scrapping done by scalpel [8]. Literature concerning treatment of gummy smile is generally anecdotal and sparse with no data supported by statistical analysis but based on routine clinical and radiographic examinations etiology of the gummy smile can be established and accordingly treatment plan is prepared.…”

“…The results showed that there was significant reduction in DOPI scores at 6 months compared with baseline in both the treatment groups (Tables 2 and 3) (Figs. [10][11][12]. The Hedin index was also used to check the extent of pigmentation.…”
