“…Others have reported similar results after transfer of bovine embryos produced in vivo . They observed a tendency for pregnancy rate to decrease with advancing maturity of the embryo (Coleman et al ., 1986) and better pregnancy rates after transfer of Bd7 (Niemann et al ., 1982). Our results agree with other studies that support the view that embryo quality is a more accurate predictor of success than the stage of embryonic development (Lindner & Wright, 1983).…”

“…Massip and Mulnard (1980) showed that the structure between the trophoblast cells of embryos is damaged during freezing and thawing. Niemann et al (1982) suggested that damage to desmosomes between trophoblast cells explains the significantly lower posttransfer pregnancy rates for expanded blastocysts. Recently, Kuwayama et al (1992) observed an apparent difference in the degree of intramembrane particle aggregation in the plasma membrane of bovine blastocysts vitrified by two methods using a freeze replica technique.…”

“…In most studies, the quality or viability of the cryopreserved embryos has been evaluated by posttransfer pregnancy rates (Els-0 1994 WILEY-LISS, INC. den et al, 1982;Chupin et al, 1984). Morphological and, particularly, ultrastructural studies of frozenthawed bovine embryos have also been carried out (Massip and Mulnard, 1980;Niemann et al, 1982, but little is known about the effect of freezing on the morphology and viability of inner cell mass (ICM) cells in bovine embryos.…”
