Comparison of the Aesthetic Facial Proportions of Southern Chinese and White Women

Abstract: To compare the aesthetic facial proportions of southern Chinese women with published average and ideal values for white women.Design: One hundred Chinese women between the ages of 18 and 40 years who had not undergone previous facial surgery were chosen at random, and their aesthetic facial proportions were measured from 5 ϫ 7-in photographs. Comparisons were made with similar reported measurements for the white face, and the surgical relevance of the differences observed is discussed. Results: The major facial… Show more

“…However, studies using direct anthropometry and photogrammetric analysis in whites and Asian subjects found variations in these proportions, with the width of the eyes and nasal widths often being either less than or greater than the inter canthal distance. [ 2 14 15 ] Nasal tip projection can be measured using different parameters. The Baum ratio is calculated by dividing the length of a line from the nasion to the nasal tip by the length of a perpendicular line from the nasal tip to a vertical line from the subnasale.…”

“…Compared with whites, Asians are more likely to display central face retrusion; flattening of the anteromedial midface; recessed piriform fossae; flatter, broader foreheads; retrognathia; and microgenia. 34,36 These congenital characteristics account for the prevalence of filler injection to the medial midface, nose, chin, and forehead of younger Asian patients. In older patients, volumization of these regions remains a priority, in conjunction with correction of age-related disharmonies.…”

“…The norm facial proportion indices obtained can be used for clinical assessment and comparison with same analysis and photogrammetric technique. Frontal photogrammetry was widely used to assess treatment change [ 6 , 9 12 ], attractiveness [ 13 , 28 , 29 ], comparisons between different ethnic groups [ 13 , 14 , 30 ] and growth [ 10 12 , 31 ] in additional to daily use for clinical diagnosis and treatment planning.…”

“…Photogrammetry is increasingly being employed to assess facial characteristics [ 6 , 9 14 ]. It is reported to be valid for many measurements [ 15 , 16 ], reliable [ 6 , 10 13 , 16 , 17 ] and is a practical approach to clinical analyses and comparison [ 6 , 14 , 17 ].…”
