Comparison of the anti‐obesity and hypocholesterolaemic effects of single Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota and probiotic cocktail

Abstract: This study compared the efficacy of Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LAB13) and a probiotic cocktail for their anti-obesity and other lipid profile modulating effects. Diet-induced obese rats were supplemented with two different probiotics which are LAB13 (1 9 10 9 CFU day À1 per rat) and cocktail of five bacterial strains (1 9 10 9 CFU day À1 per rat) for 12 weeks. Comparative data on weight gain, energy intake, liver weight, subcutaneous fat, total fat weights, total cholesterol and leptin levels in both … Show more

“…The increasing acceptance of the consumption of LAB as probiotics is due to their diverse roles in suppressing cancer (Hirayama and Rafter, 2000) and lowering serum cholesterol (Guo et al, 2010); activities against diabetes (Panwar et al, 2013), obesity (Aazmi et al, 2015), allergies (Lee et al, 2014), and inflammation (Lorea Baroja et al, 2007); reducing gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and urogenital pathogens (de Vries et al, 2006); stabilizing gut microflora (Gibson et al, 1997), increasing utilization of nutrients (Guo et al, 2010) and tolerance of lactose (Silanikove et al, 2015); improving digestion (Bokhorst et al, 2015) and stimulating the immune system (Isolauri et al, 2001), among others. Exopolysaccharides secreted by LAB strains can be used to enhance fermented milk texture and viscosity during production (Ruas-Madiedo et al, 2002).…”

“…That is why literature has tried to report the crucial role played by probiotics and their beneficial effects on different immune disorders, encompassing rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and atopic dermatitis [16]. Other notable health claims include reducing symptoms of lactose intolerance [17][18][19] as well as gut microbiota regulation [20] and digestion improvement [21], antihypertensive [22], host immune system regulation [23], anti-allergic [24], the preventive potential of mammary cancer [25], eczema in children [26], reduction of active ulcerative colitis [27], anti-obesity [28,29], a high decrease of viral-associated pulmonary damage rate [30], and necrotizing enterocolitis in neonates [31]. Moreover, the regulation of several depressive and anxiety disorders has been reported [32][33][34].…”

“…Hypercholesterolaemia is characterised by an increase in serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐C) and low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C). One of the quickest treatment approaches to control serum cholesterol and triglycerides is drug administration (Aazmi et al ., ; Richardson & Eggersdorfer, ). Due to the costs and side effects of drugs, interest in probiotic therapies to lower serum cholesterol and the risk of the coronary artery disease has been increasing as a convenient method for cholesterol mediation (Richardson & Eggersdorfer, ).…”
