Antifungal Effect of Acrylic Resin Containing Apatite-coated TiO2 Photocatalyst

The purpose of this study was to develop an acrylic resin with antifungal properties by leveraging the photocatalytic activity of apatite-coated titanium dioxide (Ap-TiO2). Candida albicans was used for antifungal activity assay of the specimen plates under ultraviolet A (UVA) with a black light source. Statistically significant decreases in cell viability in acrylic resins containing 5 wt％ and 10 wt％ Ap-TiO2 were observed after irradiation for two, four, and six hours (P<0.01), when compared to the control. As for the flexural strength and modulus values of acrylic resins mixed with Ap-TiO2 and TiO2 particles, they varied before and after irradiation. Among the tested specimens, a 5 wt％ content of Ap-TiO2 in acrylic resin exceeded the requirements of ISO 1567. It was thus suggested that acrylic resin containing 5 wt％ Ap-TiO2 could exert antifungal effects on C. albicans, while at the same time maintain adequate mechanical properties for clinical use.

ÖZETAmaç: DiĢ protezlerinin temizliği ve dezenfeksiyonuna gereken önemin verilmemesi, ağız içi enfeksiyonlarla birlikte endokardit gibi sistemik enfeksiyonlara da yol açabilir. Bu tür enfeksiyonların önlenmesi veya azaltılabilmesi için uygun protez kaide materyalinin seçimi ile birlikte protezlerin temizlenmesi ve dezenfeksiyonunu sağlayabilen etkin bir ürünün belirlenmesi büyük önem taĢımaktadır. AraĢtırma-mızda, halen Türkiye'de diĢ protezlerinin temizliği ve dezenfeksiyonlarında kullanılan çeĢitli ürünlerin antibakteriyel etkinliklerinin araĢtırılması amaçlanmıĢtır. Materyal ve Metod: AraĢtırmamızda, 3 adet alkalen peroksit grubu efervesan diĢ protez temizleme tableti (Fittydent (Matilek-Avusturya), Corega tabs (GlaxoSmithKline, Ġrlanda), Protefix (Queisser pharma, Almanya)) ile 2 adet dezenfektan solüsyonun (Curaprox BDC 105 (haftalık kullanımlı) (Swiss Premium Oral Care, Ġsveç), Curaprox BDC 100 (Günlük kullanımlı) (Swiss Premium Oral Care, Ġsveç)); dört tip protez kaide materyali deney örneklerine (Vertex (Vertex-Dental B.V, Hollanda), Rodex (Rodont, Ġtalya), Meliodent (Kulzer, Almanya), Molloplast-B (Detax, Almanya)) bulaĢtırılmıĢ Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Pseudomonas aeruginosa NCTC 6749 ve Bacillus subtilis var. niger ATCC 9372 bakteri suĢlarına karĢı etkinlikleri üretici firma tarafından önerilen sürelerde incelenmiĢtir. Bulgular: Denenen ürünlerin tamamının S.aureus ATCC 6538 bakteriye karĢı; %100 oranında etkili olduğu belirlenmiĢtir. P.aeruginosa NCTC 6749 suĢuna karĢı ise; Fittydent'in, 30 dakika temas süresinde, Corega tabs ve Protefix tabletlerinin 15'er dakikada, Curaprox BDC 105'in ise, 1. ve 7.gün sonunda da 6 saatlik temas süresinde aynı etkiyi (%100) gösterdiği belirtilmiĢtir. Curaprox BDC 100'ün ise, 5 dakika temas süresinde % 93-100 arasında etkinlik sağladığı gözlenmiĢtir. B.subtilis var. niger ATCC 9372 bakteri sporu üzerinde; Curaprox BDC 105'in 1. ve 7.gündeki solüsyonla-rının %99 oranında etkili olduğu, diğer ürünlerin ise temas süre ve protez maddelerine göre Fittydent'in; %97-98, Corega tabs' ın ; %91-99, Protefix'in; %68-95, Curaprox BDC 100' ün; %72-99 gibi değiĢen oranlarda dezenfeksiyon sağladığı belirlenmiĢtir. Sonuç: Farklı tip diĢ protez kaide maddeleri üzerinde temizlik ve dezenfeksiyon ürünlerinin etkinliklerinin ortamda bulunan bakterilere göre çok değiĢken olduğu, protez kaide maddesi tipinin ise dezenfeksiyon üzerinde bir etkisinin olmadığı gözlenmiĢtir. Protezlerin her gün temizlenmesinin ve dezenfeksiyonunun potansiyel patojen bakteriyel kontaminasyonunu önlemek için etkili bir yöntem olduğu sonucuna varılmıĢtır. Good denture hygiene is an important component of oral health and in prevention of oral mucosal lesions. The strategies to provide impactful advice include denture education combined with a demonstration using a Denture Essential Kit (DEK). Aim:To introduce DEK and to evaluate the effectiveness of denture hygiene delivery among denture wearers and clinicians. Materials and Methods:A total of 78 patients were recruited in this study (n=78). A set of questionnaire was given during denture delivery to assess the knowledge and habits on denture care before introduction of DEK. All patients were given denture hygiene in 3 methods: (i) verbally, (ii) brochure presentation and (iii) demonstration. Feedback among clinicians towards introduction of DEK was collected (n=80). Results:From 78 patients, 25 were first time denture wearers (32.1%) while 53 were previous denture wearers (67.9%). Out of 67.9%, 56.6% claimed that they had never received instructions on denture care during previous delivery stage. All patients showed significant effect on acknowledgment of receiving instructions on denture care (p<0.05). 99% of clinicians agreed that introduction of DEK is useful while giving denture hygiene instructions. Conclusion:Denture Essential Kit issued to patients during delivery appointment positively influenced their denture care perspective. Almost all clinicians agreed that DEK is beneficial to patient's overall health.
