Comparison of the Behavior of Two Nanofiltration Membranes for Sweet Whey Demineralization

Abstract: Nanofiltration is a process used to separate mineral salts from lactose, having previously removed the proteins by ultrafiltration. Both proteins and lactose can be used as raw materials to prepare a variety of products. In this paper, we studied the feasibility of demineralizing sweet whey obtained from the cheese industry of the Comunidad Valenciana (Spain) using membrane technologies. The NF200 membrane showed the highest volumetric flux and solute rejection values, whereas the DS-5 DL membrane showed the l… Show more

“…The two models describe the transport phenomena across NF membranes. Many scholars have successfully predicted the rejections of glucose and lactose by NF using the SKK model [18][19][20], but very few studies have been developed for neutral drugs.…”

“…Another alternative is the recycling of the brine for reuse (Barat and others ). This approach consists in the removal of the existing organic nature solutes in the brine (Cuartas‐Uribe and others ) with the consequent recovery of usable substances that currently are discarded (Bes‐Piá and others ). Since most of the organic pollution of the brine are proteins, the aim of this work is the study of protein removal by acidic precipitation and centrifugation, as a pretreatment before filtration stages, allowing the increase in the yield of the filtration process and delaying the fouling of membranes (Lee and others ).…”

“…The ESK model parameters (solute permeability (P ss , P si ), solute reflection coefficient (σ s ), and mass transfer coefficient (k s )) were obtained by the analysis of real rejection and flux data of Cuartas-Uribe et al [2,3]. For this purpose the procedure proposed by Vakili-Nezhaad and Akbari [5] was considered (multiobjective optimization method in genetic algorithm by using Matlab 7.6.1 (R2008a), the software package).…”
