Comparison of the communication protocols DLMS/COSEM, SML and IEC 61850 for smart metering applications

Abstract: Communication technology plays an increasingly important role in the growing automated metering infrastructure (AMI) market. This paper presents a thorough analysis and comparison of four application layer protocols in the smart metering context. The inspected protocols are DLMS/COSEM, the Smart Message Language (SML), and the MMS and SOAP mappings of IEC 61850. The focus of this paper is on their use over TCP/IP. The protocols are first compared with respect to qualitative criteria such as the ability to tran… Show more

“…Therefore, a significant future work is required to further study and analyze the effect of applying TLS to consider several clients and servers residing in different networks as well as larger data exchange. Besides, it would be interesting to further study the effect of applying TLS to the communication between clients residing in end-user networks and servers in the smart grid, because one important service for this kind of communication is the smart metering service, which has been researched in different works [31][32][33][34].…”

“…However, DLMS/COSEM does not allow the use of TLS/SSL. The support for asymmetric encryption is done by the European committee for electro-technical standardization CENELEC TC-13 [28]. Further, DLMS/COSEM protocol is suitable only for the AMI network of the smart grid in which a large number of smart meters are involved.…”

“…In the literature, several protocols have been proposed for an efficient communication of SMs, like DLMS/COSEM and IEC 61850 [23]. Nevertheless, the most promising standard is nowadays DLMS/COSEM, which has been already used by different suppliers.…”
