Comparison of the effect of propofol and N-acetyl cysteine in preventing ischaemia–reperfusion injury

Abstract: Small-dose infusions of both propofol and NAC appear to provide similar protection against ischaemia-reperfusion injury in arthroscopic knee surgery.

“…IMA has been frequently used as a marker of oxidative stress and oxidative injury after IR [19][20][21] and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the use as a marker in the diagnosis of myocardial ischemia. Normally, human albumin binds metal ions such as cobalt and copper in the serum.…”

“…The plasma level of MDA has been used as an indicator of oxidative stress. 21,24 In a clinical study, Aran et al examined pneumoperitoneumrelated oxidative injury by measuring serum oxidative stress marker levels 30 minutes after insufflation; they showed that IMA was more sensitive than other oxidative stress markers (MDA, TAS, TOS, and OSI) as an indicator of ischemiarelated injury after pneumoperitoneum. 25 Kontoulis et al 26 showed that oxidative injury increased with the duration of pneumoperitoneum and was associated with elevated MDA, MPO, and PAB levels, and that the kidneys and small intestine became more ischemic than the liver.…”

“…NAC exhibits its antioxidant property in several ways including interaction with the electrophilic groups of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) and being a glutathione (GSH) precursor [13]. The pathogenic role of oxidative stress and the protective effect of NAC have been documented in sepsis, reperfusion-induced ischemia, and drug-induced nephrotoxicity due to gentamicin and cisplatin [14][15][16][17]. Nevertheless the possible effect on colistin-induced nephrotoxicity has not been evaluated yet.…”

“…Sample size estimation was based on the SD in a similar study performed by Erturk et al 27 MDA levels (4.5 Ϯ 0.8 for control group and 3.7 Ϯ 0.6 for NAC group) were determined in the study of Ertürk et al 27 using NAC to prevent tourniquet-induced IR injury. With an alpha error of 0.05 and a power of 90%, it was calculated that sample size should consist of at least 13 patients per group.…”
