Comparison of the effects of three types of heating tobacco system and conventional cigarettes on indoor air quality

Abstract: Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) from conventional cigarettes is reported to affect indoor air quality (IAQ) in various real indoor environments. Recently, Japan Tobacco Inc. introduced three types of tobacco product that are heated rather than combusted. These comprise one direct heating tobacco system and two in-direct heating tobacco systems. In this study, the impact of using these products on IAQ was evaluated in an environmentally controlled chamber. Two environmental conditions, simulating restaurant a… Show more

“…Heated tobacco products, which used closed heating instead of combustion to distill and release tobacco components, became an important new type of tobacco product due to their significantly reduced harmful substances and lack of smoldering ( Enomoto et al, 2022 ; Watts et al, 2022 ; Wezyk-Caba et al, 2022 ; Yamamoto et al, 2022 ; Yuki et al, 2022 ; Kusonic et al, 2023 ; Vukas et al, 2023 ; Zhao et al, 2023 ). The heating temperature was generally around 300°C.…”

“…Categoria I: Estudos financiados pela indústria do tabaco Enomoto et al (2022) avaliaram o impacto de uso de produtos de tabaco aquecidos na qualidade do ar de ambientes simulando residência e restaurante. Eles apontam que houve aumento de compostos orgânicos voláteis totais, glicerol, nitrosaminas específicas de tabaco, acetaldeído, propionaldeído, n-butiraldeído, benzeno, piridino e propilenoglicol, em relação ao ambiente sem o uso de tais produtos.…”

“…Category I: Tobacco industry-funded studies Enomoto et al (2022) evaluated the impact of the use of heated tobacco products on the air quality of environments simulating residences and restaurants. They point out that there was an increase in total volatile organic compounds, glycerol, tobacco-specific nitrosamines, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, n-butyraldehyde, benzene, pyridine, and propylene glycol, in relation to the environment without the use of such products.…”
