Comparison of the effects of different lens-cleaning solutions on the protein profiles of human conjunctival cells

Abstract: We were able to demonstrate that Complete shows very little effect on the protein profiles of conjunctival cells in comparison to Opti-Free, where the cells showed very large protein profile changes, and apoptosis and necrosis of the cells was increased. These results are in concordance to clinical studies showing that the use of Complete solution made the tear film proteins similar to those of people not wearing contact lenses. Therefore, we believe that Complete is less aggressive and should provoke fewer si… Show more

“…Exposure of cultured conjunctival cells to two MPDS (a PHMBpreserved solution and a PQ1/MAPD-preserved solution; 0.1-2.5% v/ v) for 12 or 24 h resulted in significantly changed protein profiles compared to control untreated cells, and which were different for each MPDS [344]. Whilst the method used to detect and (semi-) quantify proteins did not allow for the identification of proteins, there were larger changes in proteins when the conjunctival cells were incubated in the PQ1/MAPD-preserved solution [344]. Cells exposed to the PHMB-preserved solution showed less apoptosis and necrosis [344].…”

“…This is an important consideration, as contact lenses absorb substances in care solutions and release such components from the lens during wear [79,[341][342][343]. Thus, released components have the potential to influence tear composition and modulate function of cells producing tear film constituents [344].…”
