Comparison of the Efficacy and Safety of Different Methods of Posterior Subtenon Injection

Abstract: The different methods of PST injection are equally efficacious in terms of improving visual acuity. However, the cannula method achieves the greatest quantitative reduction in macular thickness. As the cannula method is as efficacious as Smith and Nozik method it may be a preferable method to deliver posterior subtenon injection of corticosteroids.

“…The eyelids were retracted. Under sterile conditions, the superotemporal conjunctiva was lifted with a forceps and an intravenous polytetrafluoroethylene cannula of 22 G, 0.8/25 mm size was introduced superotemporally 10 mm from the limbus [5]. The needle was then removed and the cannula alone was pushed 3 mm into the sub-Tenon space.…”

“…The sub-Tenon space is preferred for drug administration in the above condition due to its prolonged effect and minimal systemic side effects. Though sub-Tenon injections have been given by various methods [5,6], the position of the cannula or the drug has not been imaged in vivo till now. We (idea conceived by D.A.K.)…”

“…Alternatively, injection through a cannula could be considered to maximize safety. 4 Although BKC is an anterior disease, a posterior route was chosen to avoid prolonged anterior chemosis, which may exacerbate ocular surface disease. Successful use of posterior sub-Tenon TA injections for other ocular inflammatory conditions including uveitis and scleritis is extensively described in the literature.…”
