Comparison of the Energy Consumption and Exhaust Emissions between Hybrid and Conventional Vehicles, as Well as Electric Vehicles Fitted with a Range Extender

Andrzej Ziółkowski,
Paweł Fuć,
Aleks Jagielski
et al.

Abstract: The introduction of new Euro exhaust emission standards and CO2 limits has forced carmakers to implement alternative hybrid and electric powertrains. We are observing a dynamic advancement of this sector. The authors’ primary motivation was to perform a series of measurements of the exhaust emissions and fuel mileages from vehicles fitted with hybrid, conventional and electric (range extender) powertrains. Three vehicles were used in the research project. The first one was a passenger car with a full hybrid po… Show more

“…The tested vehicle was equipped with a Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS), which was installed in the trunk (Figure 1). The PEMS system is equipped with the following sensors to measure pollutants in exhaust gases: a flame ionization detector (FID) for THC measurement, a chemiluminescence analyzer (CLD) for NO and NO2 measurement, collectively referred to as NOx [45,46]. The measurement range for the THC concentration in exhaust gases is 0-10000 ppm, while for NOx it is 0-3000 ppm.…”

“…These emissions come from the combustion of fossil fuels, including diesel, petrol, and heavy oils. In addition to CO 2 emissions, the burning of these fuels leads to the release of N 2 O, CH 4 , CO, and other gases, all of which are considered greenhouse gases (GHG) [2,3]. Without significant change, this situation contributes to climate change, including the global rise in average temperatures [4].…”
